How Specialty Changes Your Rate
Once you are past the journeyman line, the biggest lever on your paycheck is what kind of equipment you work on. Residential change-and-repair is the largest slice of the trade and also the most crowded, which keeps rates competitive. The specialties below pay a premium precisely because fewer techs are comfortable in them.
Commercial Refrigeration

Building Controls / BAS

Reality check on the A2L transition
With R-410A phasing down and A2L refrigerants like R-454B (GWP 466) now the standard in new residential and light-commercial equipment, techs who get comfortable early with A2L handling — leak detection, ventilation, and the updated install practices under ASHRAE 15 and 34 — are positioning themselves for the next several years of demand. That comfort is worth money, because it is still a skill many crews are scrambling to build.
Certifications That Move the Needle
Not every certificate on the wall raises your pay, but a few genuinely do. Here is how the common credentials stack up in the field.
- EPA Section 608 (Universal): This is table stakes, not a raise. Federal law requires it to buy or handle refrigerant, so getting Universal instead of just Type I or II simply keeps every door open. Skip it and you cap yourself immediately.
- NATE certification: The most widely recognized competency credential in the trade. Many shops tie a pay bump or a higher billing tier to a NATE cert, and it is a strong signal to customers and employers that you know the theory behind what you touch.
- State journeyman / master license: Where required, moving from journeyman to master license unlocks the ability to pull permits and supervise — which is often the gate to lead pay or running your own service truck.
- Manufacturer factory training: Carrier, Trane, Daikin, and others run factory schools. Being a warranty-authorized tech for a major brand makes you more valuable to any dealer that sells it.
- Specialty credentials: Controls/BAS certificates, low-temp refrigeration training, and hydronics coursework each open the higher-paying specialties above.
Field tip: Before you pay for any course out of pocket, ask your employer. Many shops reimburse NATE testing, EPA renewal, and factory training — and a documented cert is far easier leverage in a raise conversation than "I've been here three years."
Where You Work Matters
The same skill set pays very differently depending on the market. Two forces are at play: local cost of living and local demand. Hot, humid regions with year-round cooling load keep techs busy twelve months a year, while high-cost metros simply pay more across the board.

Do not read the top-of-market number and assume you should relocate. A $34/hr rate in a low-cost region can leave more in your pocket than $44/hr in a metro where rent doubles it. Always weigh the rate against what it costs to live where you'd earn it.
Beyond Base Pay: Total Compensation
Base hourly rate is only part of the picture, and comparing two job offers on hourly alone will mislead you. The real number is total annual take-home, which includes several things techs routinely undervalue:
- Overtime: Time-and-a-half in cooling season can add thousands. In busy Sun Belt shops, OT is often the single biggest add to annual pay.
- On-call and emergency premiums: Carrying the phone nights and weekends usually pays extra per shift plus a higher call-out rate.
- Spiffs and commission: On the residential service and sales side, flat-rate and performance pay can rival or beat the base rate for strong closers.
- Company vehicle and gas card: A take-home truck is worth real money you'd otherwise spend on a vehicle and fuel.
- Benefits: Health insurance, a 401(k) match, paid tool allowance, and boot/uniform stipends all have cash value — often several thousand dollars a year.
Worked example: comparing two offers
Step 1 — Offer A: $32/hr base, standard 40-hour weeks, no take-home vehicle, minimal benefits. Roughly 2,080 hours × $32 = $66,560 base.
Step 2 — Offer B: $29/hr base, but averages 8 hours of OT a week in season, a take-home truck, and a 401(k) match. Base: 2,080 × $29 = $60,320.
Step 3 — Add OT for B: ~26 busy weeks × 8 hrs × ($29 × 1.5) = 26 × 8 × $43.50 ≈ $9,048 in overtime.
Step 4 — Add the truck: A take-home vehicle and fuel conservatively saves $4,000–$6,000/yr you would otherwise spend.

Six Ways to Raise Your Rate
Time in the field raises pay slowly. These moves raise it faster. None of them require luck — just a deliberate plan and a few seasons of follow-through.
1. Pick a specialty and go deep. Refrigeration, controls, or commercial/industrial. Becoming the person your shop calls for the hard stuff is the surest path above $40/hr.
2. Get your EPA Universal and a NATE cert. One keeps every door open; the other is documented proof you can use in a raise conversation.
