R-410A vs R-454B: The A2L Refrigerant Transition

R-454B is now the refrigerant showing up on new residential and light commercial equipment. Here is what actually changes at the truck level: the pressures, the safety class, and the way you evacuate, charge, and diagnose.

Why R-410A Is Going Away

R-410A has been the residential standard for two decades, and there is nothing wrong with how it cools. The problem is its global warming potential (GWP) of 2,088. Under the federal AIM Act (American Innovation and Manufacturing Act), the EPA is phasing down the production and import of high-GWP HFCs, and R-410A is squarely in that group.

The line in the sand for our trade is January 1, 2025: new residential and light commercial air conditioners and heat pumps must use a refrigerant with a GWP below 700. R-410A does not qualify, so manufacturers moved to low-GWP A2L refrigerants. For most US residential OEMs, the chosen replacement is R-454B (GWP 466). Daikin and a few others use R-32 (GWP 675), but R-454B is what you will see most on new split systems and heat pumps.

R-410A is not banned for service. Existing systems keep running, and R-410A remains available to charge and repair them for years. What ended is the manufacture of new R-410A equipment. Expect R-410A production to step down (roughly 40% below baseline by 2029) and prices to climb, so reclaim and leak repair matter more than ever.

Notice the practical takeaway: pressures and charging method are nearly identical, so your gauge-side instincts carry over. The real change is that R-454B is mildly flammable and carries slightly more temperature glide, so both must be charged as a liquid to keep the blend fractions correct.

Pressures & Performance

This is the part techs worry about most, and it is the least dramatic. R-454B runs within about 3% of R-410A under identical conditions. If you know R-410A pressures cold, you already know R-454B pressures.

Typical R-410A Reference Pressures

  • Suction: ~118-135 psig on a 70°F day (≈40°F evaporator saturation)
  • Discharge: ~370-420 psig on a warm day (≈110°F condenser saturation)

R-454B lands right next to those numbers. At 95°F outdoor ambient, expect a high side in the ballpark of 280-290 psig depending on the system and charge. The one thing that changes: you must read pressures against an R-454B PT chart, never the R-410A scale on an older analog manifold. Because R-454B has a small amount of glide, use the dew point column for superheat (suction) and the bubble point column for subcooling (liquid line).

Target Ranges Stay The Same

  • Superheat (TXV): 8-14°F — below 5°F risks flooding, above 20°F means starved
  • Subcooling: 10-18°F (per manufacturer) — below 5°F undercharged, above 20°F overcharged

In other words, your diagnostic thresholds do not move. A properly charged R-454B system produces the same superheat and subcooling targets you already trust — you just look them up on the correct chart.

What A2L Actually Means

ASHRAE Standard 34 classifies refrigerants by toxicity (A = low) and flammability (1, 2L, 2, 3). The "2L" class is mildly flammable: it will burn, but only with a low burning velocity and a fairly high ignition energy. R-454B is A2L — low toxicity, mildly flammable. It is not propane (R-290 is A3); it takes a real ignition source and a specific concentration to light.

That said, "mildly" is not "never." Treat A2L with respect:

  • Ignition sources: no open flames, no torch striking near a suspected leak, and be mindful of electrical sparks when the space is unventilated.
  • Ventilation: A2L is heavier than air and pools low. Ventilate closets, basements, and equipment rooms before and during service.
  • Built-in mitigation: Many A2L air handlers include a factory leak detector that shuts the unit down and runs the blower to disperse a leak. Do not defeat it.
  • Charge limits: ASHRAE 15 and UL 60335-2-40 set maximum charge per conditioned space, which is why some large systems use multiple circuits.

Never Torch a Charged A2L System

Recover the refrigerant and purge with dry nitrogen before you braze. Brazing on a system that still holds A2L refrigerant, or in a poorly ventilated space where a leak has collected, is exactly the scenario the flammability class warns about. Reclaim first, flow nitrogen while brazing, then leak check.

Safe Service Procedure (Worked Example)

Here is a clean field walk-through for a leak repair and recharge on a 3-ton R-454B heat pump with a nameplate charge of 8 lb 4 oz. The sequence matters — the A2L steps wrap around the same evacuation and charging you already do.

Step 1: Read the nameplate

Confirm R-454B (A2L) and record factory charge = 8 lb 4 oz. Never assume it is R-410A because the pressures look familiar.

Step 2: Ventilate and kill ignition sources

Ventilate the equipment space, confirm the unit's leak detector is functional, and keep torches and sparks away until the system is recovered.

Step 3: Recover with A2L-rated equipment

Recover into an A2L-listed cylinder (gray body, red band) with an A2L-rated recovery machine and hoses.

Step 4: Repair, then evacuate

Flow nitrogen while brazing the leak → pressure test → pull vacuum to 500 microns and hold

Step 5: Weigh in the exact charge

Charge liquid R-454B by weight to 8 lb 4 oz (blend — never vapor charge)

Step 6: Verify with superheat & subcooling

Measured SC = 12°F, SH = 10°F → both in target on the R-454B chart

Result: Charged and Verified

With subcooling at 12°F and superheat at 10°F, the system is correctly charged. Weigh-in gets you close; superheat and subcooling confirm it. Log the recovered and added amounts for your EPA 608 records.

Tools & Recovery Changes

Most of your kit still works, but a few items must be A2L-rated. The rating exists because tools for flammable refrigerant use spark-free motors, tighter seals, and different pressure ratings.

  • Recovery machine: must be UL-listed for A2L (spark-free / class-rated motor).
  • Recovery cylinders: A2L-specific, commonly gray with a red band; do not mix refrigerants.
  • Leak detector: use an electronic detector rated for A2L; many shops carry a dedicated A2L sensor.
  • Manifold & hoses: A2L-rated with the correct pressure rating and low-loss fittings.
  • Vacuum pump: a standard micron-gauge evacuation still applies — pull to 500 microns and confirm the decay.

EPA 608 still governs everything. You still need certification to buy and handle refrigerant, you still must recover before opening a system, and you still keep records. A2L adds handling requirements on top of 608 — it does not replace it.

Field Tips & Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not top off across refrigerants. R-454B is not a retrofit for an existing R-410A system. They are separate systems with separate equipment; never mix.
  • Read the right PT chart. Using the R-410A scale on R-454B will send your superheat and subcooling numbers slightly off and make you chase a charge problem that is not there.
  • Charge as liquid, every time. Vapor-charging a blend pulls off the lighter component first and shifts the composition — you end up with the wrong refrigerant in the system.
  • Respect the low-pooling behavior. A2L is heavier than air, so a slow leak collects near the floor. Ventilate before you assume a space is clear.
  • Keep the factory mitigation intact. If an air handler has an A2L leak detector and dilution blower routine, leave it wired and functional.
  • Plan for R-410A scarcity. As production steps down, R-410A gets pricier. Fix leaks properly and reclaim rather than venting — it is both the law and good economics.

Bottom Line for Techs

R-454B behaves like R-410A on the gauges and charges the same way. The transition is really about safety habits: A2L-rated recovery gear, ventilation, ignition control, and reading the correct PT chart. Master those and the change is routine.
