What Makes an HVAC App Worth Keeping
There are hundreds of HVAC apps in the store, and most get installed, opened twice, and forgotten. The ones that earn a permanent spot on your home screen share a few traits. They answer a question in seconds, they work when you have no signal, and they give you numbers you can actually trust against manufacturer specs.
Before you install anything, judge it on four things:
- Speed. If it takes more taps than pulling up a paper PT chart, it loses. A great app answers before you finish reaching for the gauge.
- Offline capability. You work in attics, crawlspaces, mechanical rooms, and on rooftops. An app that needs a connection to calculate is dead weight.

A pressure-temperature chart is the single most-referenced tool in refrigerant work. You look up saturation temperature from pressure dozens of times a day to calculate superheat and subcooling. Whatever you use, confirm it lists R-454B. Because R-454B runs within roughly 3% of R-410A pressures, techs sometimes assume the old chart is close enough — but on a precise charge you want the real numbers, not an approximation.
Zeotropic blends: use the right column
For blends like R-454B and R-407C, use the dew point saturation temperature for superheat calculations (suction side) and the bubble point for subcooling (liquid side). Grabbing the wrong column can throw your reading off by several degrees and send you chasing a charge problem that is not there.
Superheat, Subcooling & Airflow Calculators

- CFM = BTU ÷ (1.08 × ΔT) — and the rule of thumb, ~400 CFM per ton.

For fixed-orifice systems, make sure your calculator does target superheat — the Carrier method is 3(wet bulb) + (80 − outdoor dry bulb) − 1 — because a fixed orifice has no single fixed superheat target the way a TXV does.

Do not skip the license

How to Build Your Toolkit (Step by Step)
You do not need twenty apps. You need one from each layer, set up before you are standing on a hot roof with a customer watching. Here is the order that works.
Step 1 — Install a PT chart with A2Ls. Confirm it lists R-410A, R-454B, R-32, and R-22, with bubble and dew points for blends.
Step 2 — Add a superheat/subcooling calculator. It should also do target superheat for fixed-orifice systems.
Step 3 — Add an airflow and duct tool. CFM per ton, sensible BTU (1.08 × CFM × ΔT), friction rate, and equivalent round duct.
Step 4 — Add a code and refrigerant reference. IMC/UMC, ASHRAE 15/34, EPA 608, plus GWP and safety class for A2L work.
